Here are a few highlights from Adam Tschorn’s recent article on The Facial Hair Handbook and the upcoming National Beard and Mustache Championships. Adam knows beards, and I’m elated that he recommends the book!
If you’ve ever thought about growing a beard — or wanted a glimpse at the habits and rituals of someone who does it literally for sport, it’s worth checking out.
What The Facial Hair Handbook has that no other tonsorial tome can ever match is a proven track record — that beard, ‘Big Red’ as Passion calls it, has won two international competitions. So, when he suggests giving the beard a warm jojoba oil treatment, or serves up maxims like Passion’s 1st Law of Facial Hair (‘Healthy Man, Healthy Beard’), it seems to carry some weight.
The guy’s got swagger in spades — in person he comes across like some kind of red-bearded satyr — and that attitude comes through on the pages. That makes the book a fun read — even if your aspirations for facial adornment never move beyond the milk-mustache phase.
This is the best interview that I’ve done, straight up. Excellent beard blog and overall beard-everything-aggregator Build-A-Beard interviewed me about beards, competition, and of course, The Facial Hair Handbook.

Enter the Beard is Matt Lawrence’s documentary about the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships. The movie features this beard book author, Jack Passion.

Beardo is a documentary about beards and the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships. From the Beardo Website:
‘Beardo’ is a documentary on the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships (WBMC). Held in Anchorage, Alaska in 2009, this biennial competition judges men in eighteen different moustache, partial beard, and full beard categories for the title of “Best Facial Hair in the World.” This international event boasts nearly 300 competitors from 15 countries. The WBMC usually takes place in Europe, but was held in the U.S. for only the second time ever. In years past, every competition has been dominated by the Germans…
Produced by Jeffrey Tocci and DIGICO Shoot | Post | Design, ‘Beardo’ talks to first-time and veteran contestants from different countries about facial hair in soceity, and the competition and the competition aftermath. One-on-one interviews get behind the beards and reveal motivations, passions, dreams, and the stigma of living in a modern world with beards and moustaches.
I am featured throughout the movie, and here’s the trailer:
